Barry Green, Dave Green & Henry Lowther (4th September 2013)

This was a very special night of music that was engrossing and played with enormous skill.  Barry Green's piano and Dave Green's double bass gave a masterly example of togetherness.  They seemed almost glued together as they chased and twisted through the music, developing a conversational quality that was delightful.

Barry's touch is clean and crisp and Dave is a maestro on bass, showing why he's been highly sought after for several decades.

Henry Lowther has a pure approach to the trumpet, without vibrato or other effects.  His sound has an appealing tinge of melancholy. As a composer he contributed two numbers to the repertoire of mostly jazz standards.

These were well chosen for variety, from Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust, Monk's Dream and Dizzy Gillespie's Con Alma to the nice old song It's Been A Long Long Time. This was an example of the duo speeding up together without any obvious signal. They achieved this several times across the evening, returning to the original tempo with similarly mysterious "telepathy"

The second set included Kenny Wheeler's Everybody's Song But My Own, Strayhorn's Johnny Come Lately and If I Should Lose You, which had everyone exchanging exciting eight bar passages.

Henry Lowther then used a mute for the first and only time in the evening on  the beautiful It Never Entered My Mind.  Everyone played strikingly well on this ballad which was announced as the final number.  However, such was the clamour from the good sized Cask audience that one more number was granted to us - Clifford Brown's Sandu.  Afterwards we could reflect on how lucky we had been to witness such high quality jazz.
