Josh Kemp Quartet (5th February 2014)

Josh KempThose of us who ignored the February rain to hear this group were amply rewarded.  We heard music-making of the highest order from four superbly accomplished musicians.

Saxophonist Josh Kemp was appearing for the first time at The Cask, though his rhythm  section was made up of guys who had all been before. They were the Jamil Sheriff Trio with Dave Walsh on drums, Pete Turner, double bass and Jamil on piano. They have been a unit for about eighteen months and have developed an almost telepathic bond.

Happily, Josh was on the same wavelength and together their conjoined musical sensibilities and tastes created a lush, fresh soundscape.

Those of you who read the jazz press will know that Josh Kemp is touring with support from Jazz Services with The Jazz Prophets. However, the Prophets have an entirely different rhythm section so what is going on?  Well, simply put, there is a South/North divide with the quartet.

We were lucky enough to hear the Northern version, but anyone buying the album Tone Poetry gets to hear the other rhythm section.

Given that, perhaps it is all the more remarkable that we enjoyed an evening of attractive, melodic jazz that could not be bettered.
